Safety tips for Prescott households this Halloween

This Halloween, the one thing you don't want to be afraid of is people getting hurt on your property. Halloween is all about fun and candy, not worry and lawsuits. That's why Mosaic insurance, Prescott’s leading independent insurance provider, is here to tell you how to keep your Halloween fun and safe.

Lighting - If you plan on having trick-or-treaters, keep your porch light lit. Not only does it alert trick-or-treaters of potential candy, but it also makes it easier for them to see where they’re going. Make sure that you replace any burned out lights that could help with visibility at night. Make sure any holiday lights that you put up are grounded with a ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). It’s also a good idea to use low voltage lights: they save money and are les
s likely to overload your circuit breaker.

Walkways - Make sure to keep all walkways that could feasibly be used by any costumed-visitors clean and clutter free. Put your trashcan in the garage, if possible, and make sure to lock all doors besides the front. Sweep any leaves out of the way of your walkway/driveway. Move any bikes, hoses, plants, and other items away from walking areas. Decorative items, like jack-o-lanterns and Halloween decorations, should be placed out of the way of where people would reasonably walk. Also, remember that children tend to walk off the paths laid out for them, so if you have any decorations, make sure they are well lit.

Jack-o-lanterns - If you plan on using real candles inside your jack-o-lanterns, make sure that they are far away from walkways to prevent any costumes, props, or decorations from potentially catching fire. Also, a great alternative for a real candle is an electric light or glow stick. Finally, make sure that your smoke alarms are working, because, worst case scenario, they can alert yourself and others of the impending danger of a jack-o-lantern related fire.

Pets - Keep your pets inside will reduce the risk of them getting hurt by cars and people, while also reducing the risk of them hurting others as well. Animals get frightened easily, so it’s generally best to leave your dog inside.

Home Security - Halloween is a prime time for mischief and burglaries. If you are going trick-or-treating, make sure that your house is locked, any motion activated lights are set to on, and your security system (if applicable) is on and armed. Let your neighbors know that you won't be home and that they should report any suspicious activities at your home while you are away.

Halloween is one of the most fun holidays for children. By following these rules, you can keep everyone safe and still have a ton of fun.
